U.S. Representative Virginia 'Ginny' Brown-Waite (FL-05)today reluctantly supported House passage of H.R. 5140, the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act of 2008.

“While almost every Member of this body supports an economic stimulus package, I really must question the legislation before us today. Missing from the bill is any attempt to help those senior citizens who rely solely on Social Security for their income; a group that includes thousands of my constituents. Many of my retired constituents face rising property taxes, astronomical homeowner’s insurance rates and cannot afford to keep their home without help from the federal government. While House passage today moves the legislation forward, I sincerely hope that the Senate will include measures to help our senior citizens with an economic stimulus of their own.

Second, the bill sends hundreds of millions of dollars to people who do not pay federal income taxes, including residents of Puerto Rico and territories like Guam. I do not believe American taxpayer funds should be sent to foreign citizens who do not pay taxes. Americans want an economic stimulus for Dunnellon, Brooksville and Clermont, not for San Juan or Hagatna. As the legislation moves forward, it must be changed to ensure that only federal taxpaying American citizens receive rebate checks.
..
“Our economic stimulus package should go to those struggling to keep their homes, whether it is the result of losing their job, or as it is in my district, having to pay the 500-700% increase in their homeowner’s insurance rates. Tax rebate checks should go to American taxpaying citizens, not foreign citizens and nationals who don’t pay into the federal treasury. As this bill goes forward, we must address the need for state sales tax deduction renewal and targeted relief for senior citizens who make too much to qualify for rebate checks under the current legislation. I call on the Senate to improve the stimulus package as I have outlined above, and look forward to it coming back to the House for final passage after my concerns have been addressed.”

Ivonne Acosta Lespier dijo...

Laura dijo...

Ivonne Acosta Lespier dijo...

Ivonne Acosta Lespier dijo...

SEGOLENE ROYAL'S SUPPORT OF PUERTO RICO INDEPENDENCE TAKES HARVARD BY STORM!

***Please help, Dr. Acosta.***

Dearest Dr. Ivonne Acosta,

Salut!

I am an admirer of your books ever since I started reading them in France almost twenty years ago. I have always meant to write you but I did not want to take up your valuable time.

Nevertheless, I think the situation now calls for me to write to you to ask for your needed assistence. Could you please help Harvard's "intelligentsia" by offering a brief commentary about why it is not strange for the topic of Puerto Rico's status to be discussed in Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government's "Aula Magna" where important figures such as Manuel Rodriguez Orellanta and Juan Manuel Garcia Pasalacqua have spoken before?

The issue has come up because Segolene Royal supported Puerto Rico independence at the JFK School of Government. Some people have been scandalized that US Democratic values have been questioned in the sanctuary of Academic American politics (JFK School) by discussing a "thorny and controversial" issue such as Puerto Rico in the presence of a foreign dignatary such as Segolene Royale. They are more indignant that Segolene Royal took the question about Puerto Rico, and that she was willing to reply that she supported Porto Rico's independance as long as the International socialiste (IS) supports it.

What is so surprising about it! France's history is intimately connected to that of Porto Rico for almost five centuries, why are some people scandalized that Porto Rico would be discussed in the context of France? Maybe an internationally-respected Historian such as you could offer them some timely-necessary perspective on why France's politicians are more than "authorized" to call for the independence of U.S. territories if the U.S. continues to abdicate responsibility about resolving its colonial problem (as France was forced to do).

Maybe you and/or another Porto Rican may help my fellow French colleagues here to be less ignorant about Porto Rico (or, should I say Puerto Rico, even if the English and French call it Porto Rico?)

Here are the links of examples of these interesting debates that have taken Harvard's blogs and "political pundits" by storm:

I have had to bite my toungue not to say what I am sure would be best said by people of your vast knowledge, culture and intellect.

Plus, I have to admit that while I do not know much about Puerto Rico, my intuition tells me that Puerto Rico has all the reasons to be debated at Harvard and no person should be placed under a "MORDACHE" (mordaza?) just for calling for Puerto Rico's independence from the United States.

Was Miss Royal ("Sego") right to talk about this at Harvard?

I hope you can offer some desperately needed perspective at these Harvard blogs, since that may help educate the Harvard student-publications that are writing about these topics.

Respectfully and expectant of any kind help you may offer, your admirer and faithful reader,

Marie Luise

Dear Marie Luise,
I confess I am a little surprised and more than pleased by your comment. I had no idea that Segolene Royal had been invited to JFK at Harvard. I am an admirer of Segolene and felt really sad when Sarkosy won the election.
However this is not the space for a response to your many interesting points.
Could you please send me your email to: isocosta@prtc.net ? I'll write to you as soon as I read all the links you sent me.
Thanks for your nice words about my work.
